Michael Demain

Michael Demain (b. 1957, Accrington, Lancashire) is a British wildlife painter whose work is shaped by long familiarity with the landscapes of northern England. Largely self-taught, he came to painting in his early thirties after working in manual trades, developing his practice independently rather than through formal art education.

Demain’s paintings focus primarily on birds—especially species associated with moorland and upland environments—and are informed by sustained field observation. His time working with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in the Bowland area gave him close access to habitats and behaviour, which feeds into the accuracy and restraint of his compositions.

His work is less about spectacle than attention: quiet light, shifting weather, and brief, often overlooked moments in the landscape. This measured approach, combined with careful detail and naturalistic colour, places him within a contemporary British wildlife tradition that values observation over dramatization.

Over time, his paintings have been exhibited widely at wildlife and country art shows across the UK and have found a steady audience among collectors drawn to their authenticity and sense of place. Despite this recognition, his work retains a grounded, observational quality, closely tied to the environments that continue to inform it.
